FACE IT
First and foremost, the big 'F' is for fun. Above all else, this has to be fun.
But after that...
Fitness- Increasingly this will be a basic necessity. Constantly improving one's fitness to attain a high level of strength and endurance will be expected. Chronic injuries will impede your performance and threaten your position unless they are overcome.
Attendance- All practices must be attended and erg tests taken when required. Injury absences may count against you. Doctors appts., family trips, projects, etc., non-recognized religious events, other extra-curricular activities, and the necessity of doing homework (other than to regain eligibility) are NOT reasons to miss practice.
Coachability- To improve, one must ALWAYS be open to coaching, and must implement the changes requested. Rowers by necessity will possess a positive and enthusiastic approach to their coaches' instruction and feedback.
Effort- Constant, positive, hardworking effort is what makes a successful rower. Zero effort leads to zero gain, which equates to decreasing ability over time. Effort must be present in ALL ASPECTS of the team activities: warm-ups, land work, erg pieces, water time, set-up/take-down, regatta prep and participation.
Interaction- Everyone on the team should freely and positively interact, providing assistance, support, feedback, and encouragement to each and every member. Everyone should know everyone else's name, behave in a manner that earns teammates' respect, and likewise respect the rest of the team.
Teamwork- Above all else. Every individual strives to be their best everyday so that the team can and will succeed.
Notice this doesn't say anything about technique or erg scores. Those things will naturally follow when these practices are implemented.
